                                                                      Student Position: Museum Outreach & Archivist
                                                                     Waverley Heritage Museum
                                                                                   Waverley, NS
The Waverley Heritage Museum is seeking a summer student to support its village museum operations, with a focus on increasing community interest in the museum and attracting volunteers to key roles. The student will participate in community engagement and use the museum collection as a tool for addressing community needs. This outreach-focused work is combined with the normal operation of the museum in engaging visitors and giving tours of the historic artifact collection, plus handling communications and office support. Events, education and familiarization with the collection’s database are also part of the diverse work experience. The student will work alone at times and may have assignments outside the museum, but typically will be the person creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors of all ages and potential volunteers. The student will be trained and supervised by members of the Waverley Heritage Society under a Student Coordinator.
Qualifications: Experience interacting with the public; effective oral and written English language communication skills and a demonstrated interest in history is required. Demonstrated skills in organization, attention to detail, self-motivation to achieve results without close supervision, problem-solving, use of the internet and social media for marketing and research purposes. Education or experience in marketing, public relations and history are assets. Public transportation to the museum is not available, so the student must be able to provide their own transportation.
The student must be a full-time student in an accredited post-secondary institution or a graduating grade 12 student who is enrolled full-time in a university or college program in the coming fall term. A copy of their acceptance letter and/or copy of transcript(s) must be submitted as proof of eligibility. The student must be a permanent resident of the province or reside in Nova Scotia for at least six months prior to this work term.
The Museum Outreach & Archivist is responsible for:
 Identifying opportunities to use the museum collection to address community needs
 Engaging with community members to foster interaction with the collection
 Attracting, welcoming and working with volunteer for archival, research and other museum roles
 Enhancing awareness of and interest in the museum through social media and the museum’s web page
 Coordinating and participating in special events
 Opening and closing the museum on scheduled days
 Conducting guided tours with museum visitors to interpret the museum collections
 Responding to enquiries
 Becoming familiar with and following established museum processes and procedures
 Maintaining museum safety & security
 Museum cleaning (sweeping and dusting)
 Other museum duties as required
Hours: Monday – Friday; 9:30 am-4:30 pm, with some weekend and evening work (with alternate time off)
Salary: Range $10.85 – $13.00/hr (dependent on the skills and experience of the successful applicant)
Term of employment: May 29 to Aug 25
